Countries and Nationalities

The word “Country“refers to the land. It is a place where a group of people are living.

When we want to know someone’s country we ask with  “where”. When we want to know about the nationality we ask with “what”.

  • Example:

Speaker 1: Where are you from?
Speaker 2: I am from Morocco.
Speaker 1: What nationality are you?
Speaker 2: I am Moroccan.

This is a list of famous countries, nationalities and languages of the world. It is ordered alphabetically.
For teacher : What can you do with Vocabulary : Countries and Nationalities?
There are many activities you can do with this vocabulary:

  • The first activity:

Write random countries on the blackboard and tell the students to try to memorize them in about 1 minute (the timing depends on the number of words you have written). Then erase the blackboard and ask the students to either tell or write them on the BB. you can even ask them to spell the vocabulary so that they revise the alphabet and the vocabulary too.

  • The second activity:

Write some nationalities, countries and languages randomly and ask students to assign each nationality and language to the right country.

  • The third activity:

Provide some pictures of maps or flags of the world. divide the class into two groups. And make a competition between the two groups with scoring written on the blackboard ( students always love this kind of activities because there is fun within learning).

  • The fourth activity:

make small flashcards where there is nationalities and countries. one student pick one randomly and ask other student about his/her country and nationality.
